In the 1990's, a major earthquake hit where we lived in Southern California. Our house which was approximately 30 miles from the epicenter had lots of stuff fall off shelves and lots of broken objects that hit hard floors, but no structural damage. Our place of business however, which was just 14 miles away from our home was red-tagged (marked uninhabitable) forcing the business we worked for to pack up and find a new place to conduct business. Needless to say business was all about recovery mode for several weeks after the first big earthquake. Many others in the area were left for days without water, power and sometimes even without homes. Lives were lost. Transportation had major interruptions as freeways collapsed. Entire neighborhoods were red-tagged. Aftershocks continued for many months after the initial earthquake. Many weren't prepared. The earthquake happened in the middle of the night. Without power or flashlights they couldn't see around their homes and many couldn't find their shoes with broken glass on the floors as they got out of bed. Natural gas lines ruptured, fires started, power failed. Water stopped coming out of the taps.
